Liposuction Surgery

By

Liposuction is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure where excess fat is removed from the body with the use of a surgical instrument known as a cannula and a vacuum. Liposuction is not a “quick-fix” for dieting and exercise, but more of a body contouring procedure to remove fatty deposits from areas resistant to traditional diet and exercise. Liposuction procedures help patients achieve the look they desire, though the look does come with inherent risks.

The amount of fat that can be removed in a single liposuction session will vary from patient to patient, generally being determined by the doctor and patient well before surgery is to be scheduled. Fat removal should only be conducted by a skilled and licensed surgeon as complications from the removal of too much fat, or the use of improper procedures can become life-threatening.

Liposuction Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

There are various procedures in place that a surgeon can employ to remove excess fat from their patients. All involve the basic premise of using a cannula and a vacuum to remove the fat from the body without disturbing other organs and tissues, but several variations are available. They are:

  • Dry Liposuction: Does not use any fluid injection before fat removal. This process is rarely used in modern practices.
  • Wet Liposuction: a small volume fluid, generally less than the expected amount of fat to be removed, is injected into the fatty deposit to aid in reducing the overall pain and associated blood loss of the procedure. The fluid is usually a combination of sodium chloride, lidocaine and epinephrine. This fluid helps the body loosen the fat cells and makes them ready for vacuuming.
  • Super Wet Liposuction: This procedure follows closely to the wet liposuction procedure, with the exception that the amount of fluid that is injected is equal to the amount of fat being removed. This practice is favored by many cosmetic surgeons for high volume liposuction procedures. Since this type of procedure is considered major surgery, the patient is normally completely anesthetized.
  • Tumescent Liposuction: This procedure is not commonly practiced anymore and was the precursor to the wet liposuction procedure. The same fluid mixture is injected into the space between the fat and muscle layers, allowing more room for the cannula to work. Complications from this procedure include lidocaine toxicity, though rare, due to the large amounts of solution being injected into the patients.
  • Laser Assisted Liposuction: Laser Assisted liposuction depends on the use of thermal energy to transform the fat into a liquid state instead of the injection of fluids.
  • Suction Assisted Liposuction: This refers to the method of fat extraction, and is currently the most used procedure in the liposuction arsenal.
  • Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction: This also refers to the method being used to extract the fat from the body. In Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction, an ultrasound machine transmits ultrasound waves into the fatty deposit through a specialized cannula which bursts the cell walls of the fat cells and allows them to become liquid. This procedure is used when working in areas where large muscle groups reside and the propensity for damaging those muscles is high.

There are other variations of mechanical removal of the fat cells as well as combinations of techniques listed above are used based on certain criteria and patient considerations.

Risks And Recovery

The incisions involved with traditional liposuction plastic surgery are generally small and heal with minimal scarring or complication. Complications generally occur internally and include excessive bleeding, shock from fluid loss, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. Each of these complications can be potentially life-threatening necessitating the liposuction procedures be performed in a hospital setting with adequate support staff to reduce risks.

The rate of recovery depends on the extent of the procedure as well as any underlying health conditions the patient may have. Most patients can expect to return to work within 2 weeks of having the procedure done. A compression bandage will be worn for 2-4 weeks post operative and any non dis solvable sutures should be removed in seven to ten days. Swelling will reduce over a period of six months and final results of the procedure may not be evident until the swelling subsides. The removal of fat cells is considered permanent, however, the patient must adhere to a diet and exercise program to keep the body from producing more.

Liposuction looks so painful...I know it is a surgical procedure and recovery is required. How about some alternative treatments, like those shown at http://www.my-zerona.com ?
